The course took place in the Fall Semester of 2014. The whole class participated in the improvement of a public space in downtown Haifa so it can be used as a social space for the neighborhood.

Wake The Monster
An installation that deals with the meaning of space, and its psychological function, drawn conceptually from the story of Jona and the Whale. The viewer enters inside a neutral space, which turns into a mystical monter’s belly, by sound and light. The space senses sound created by the viewer and react by grumping, shouting or yelling at him.
Responsive Architecture
Smart Seat
This project suggests rethinking the traditional public seating experience in the age of new media and social networks. Using distance and capacity sensors the smart seat maps its nearby surroundings, knowing whether or not others are approaching the bench. Depending on the social input given, the smart seat reacts in a series of conditional outputs. If the input is “busy”, every time someone else approaches the smart seat, gear motors will roll the hammock like seats up and will deny “invasion”. On the contrary, if the input is “available”, the smart seat will invoke social communication using subtle movements controlled by the engines, and cheerful music inviting others to share the bench with the person sitting.
